本を読むということ

インターネットが普及ふきゅうして以来いらい、私わたしたちが一日いちにちに触ふれる文字もじの量りょうは、かつてとは比くらべものにならないほど増ふえた。にもかかわらず、本ほんを読よまなくなったと言いわれるのはなぜだろうか。

おそらく、画面がめんの上うえで行おこなわれているのは、読よむというより探さがすことに近ちかいからである。検索けんさくして、必要ひつようなところだけを拾ひろい、次つぎへ移うつる。効率こうりつという点てんでは、これほど優すぐれた方法ほうほうはない。しかし、そこでは自分じぶんが知しりたいと思おもったこと以外いがいは、目めに入はいらないままである。

一冊いっさつの本ほんを初はじめから終おわりまで読よむという行為こういは、その意味いみで非効率的ひこうりつてきである。関心かんしんのない章しょうも通り過とおりすぎなければならないし、途中とちゅうで退屈たいくつもする。ところが、後あとになって記憶きおくに残のこっているのは、しばしばその余分よぶんな部分ぶぶんなのだ。読書どくしょが私わたしたちに与あたえるのは、答こたえではなく、自分じぶんでは立たてられなかった問といなのかもしれない。

Since the internet became widespread, the amount of text we encounter in a day has grown beyond comparison with the past. And yet we are told people no longer read. Why?

Probably because what happens on a screen is closer to searching than to reading. You search, pick out only the part you need, and move on. As a matter of efficiency, no method could be better. But there, anything beyond what you already wanted to know never enters your field of view.

Reading a book from beginning to end is, in that sense, inefficient. You have to pass through chapters that do not interest you, and you get bored along the way. Yet what stays in the memory afterwards is often precisely those “superfluous” parts. What reading gives us may not be answers, but questions we could never have framed ourselves.
