翻訳という営み
翻訳は原文の劣化した複製にすぎない、という見方は根強い。だが、この見方は翻訳を移し替えとしてのみ捉えている点で、いささか一面的であろう。
ある言語で書かれた文章には、その言語が長い時間をかけて蓄えてきた含みが幾重にも折り込まれている。翻訳者はそれを完全に再現することはできない。できないことを承知のうえで、何を残し何を捨てるかを選ぶ。その選択の総体が、翻訳という営みにほかならない。
すなわち翻訳とは、失うことによって、原文が何であったかを逆に照らし出す作業なのである。

The view that a translation is no more than a degraded copy of the original is deep-rooted. But that view is somewhat one-sided in grasping translation solely as a transfer.
A text written in one language has folded into it, layer upon layer, the implications that language has accumulated over a long time. The translator cannot reproduce them completely. Knowing that it cannot be done, they choose what to keep and what to let go. The sum of those choices is precisely what translation is.
Translation, in other words, is work that throws light back on what the original was — by losing it.
