外国人観光客の増加は、地域の経済にとって大きな恵みである。しかしその一方で、住民の生活が脅かされているという声も聞かれるようになった。ある古い町並みで知られる地区では、朝早くから写真を撮る人が家の前に集まり、住人が落ち着いて出入りできない日が続いたという。
問題は観光客の数そのものではなく、そこが生活の場でもあるという事実が忘れられがちなことだろう。訪れる側が少し想像力を働かせるだけで、防げる争いは決して少なくないはずである。

The rise in foreign visitors is a great blessing for a region's economy. At the same time, you now also hear that residents' lives are being threatened. In one district known for its old streets, people gathering in front of houses to take photographs from early in the morning meant residents could not come and go in peace for days on end.
The problem is not the number of tourists in itself, but that the fact of the place also being somewhere people live is easily forgotten. If visitors used a little imagination, surely a good many of these frictions could be avoided.
