日本語を勉強している人の多くが、敬語は難しいと言います。確かに、尊敬語と謙譲語の使い分けは覚えることが多く、日本人でさえ間違えることがあります。しかし、敬語の本当の目的は、正しい形を使うことではなく、相手との距離を示すことです。ですから、少しぐらい形が間違っていても、丁寧に話そうという気持ちが伝われば、失礼にはなりません。大切なのは、完璧さよりも心づかいなのです。

Many people studying Japanese say that keigo is difficult. Certainly there is a lot to remember in telling sonkeigo from kenjougo, and even Japanese people get it wrong. But the real purpose of keigo is not to use the correct form; it is to show the distance between you and the other person. So even if your form is slightly wrong, as long as the wish to speak politely comes across, it will not be rude. What matters is consideration rather than perfection.
