The primary school in my home town is to close next spring, after a hundred and twenty years. This year it has nine pupils. The school they will be merged into is forty minutes away by bus.

When I heard, my first feeling was that I wanted to object. But it is the children who actually attend. In a classroom of nine, PE and choir cannot be done as one would wish. In terms of the chance to meet a wide range of friends, the merger has a clear advantage.

What still will not settle is that the school was not simply a place for study. The whole town came to sports day, and neighbours wept at the graduation ceremony. The school closing also means the townspeople lose their reason to gather a few times a year.

How should one count what efficiency cannot measure? With no answer, I sit looking at the invitation to the closing ceremony.
