私（わたし）はまわりみちまでしてローマにいった。

I went out of my way as far as Rome.

私（わたし）はまっすぐに家（いえ）に帰（かえ）らないで回り道（まわりみち）をして郵便局（ゆうびんきょく）に寄（よ）ってきた。

Instead of coming directly home, I took the long way and stopped by the post office.
