彼（かれ）が通り過（とおりす）ぎようとしたとき、スフィンクスは彼（かれ）の前（まえ）に飛び出（とびだ）した。

When he was about to pass, the Sphinx jumped in front of him.

突然（とつぜん）、スフィンクスがその頭（あたま）を上（あ）げた。

Suddenly, the Sphinx raised its head.

スフィンクスは彼（かれ）のまわりを歩き始（あるきはじ）めた。

The Sphinx began to walk around him.

この恐（おそ）ろしい怪物（かいぶつ）はスフィンクスであった。

This terrible monster was the Sphinx.

「もしおまえが私（わたし）のなぞなぞ答（こた）えられたら、私（わたし）はおまえを無事（ぶじ）に通（とお）してやる」とスフィンクスは言（い）った。

"I will let you pass safely," the Sphinx said, "if you can answer my riddle."
