先を越す

私（わたし）は今日（きょう）自分（じぶん）の申込書（もうしこみしょ）を上司（じょうし）に提出（ていしゅつ）するつもりだったが、彼（かれ）に先（さき）を越（こ）されてしまった。

I was going to hand in my application form to the boss today, but he beat me to the punch.

僕（ぼく）はバスケットボールチームの最後（さいご）のポジションの申し込（もうしこ）みをしようとスポーツ事務所（じむしょ）へ行（い）ったが、誰（だれ）かが先（さき）を越（ご）してしまった。

I went down to the sports office to sign up for the last position on the basketball team, but somebody else beat me to it.
