Become / decide on 〜になる・〜にする

Meaning

〜になる = "become ~" (a change happens naturally). 〜にする = "decide on ~ / make it ~" (an active choice by someone).

Formation

[noun / na-adj stem] + になる / にする

Notes

With i-adjectives: drop い → 〜くなる / 〜くする (大きくなる "becomes big"). 〜にします is THE phrase for ordering ("I'll have the coffee" → コーヒーにします).

Examples

来年（らいねん）、大学生（だいがくせい）になります。

Next year I'll become a university student. (〜になる)
