N4 verb-grammar

Come to be able to 〜ようになる

Meaning

Marks a change over time — "come to ~", "start to ~", "become able to ~". The state now is different from how it was.

Formation

Notes

For an ability, the verb must be in the potential form: 話せるようになりました ("came to be able to speak"), NOT ×話すようになりました. With a plain verb it means a change of habit instead: 毎朝走るようになった ("I started running every morning"). The negative counterpart is 〜なくなる: 食べなくなりました ("stopped eating it").
