Existence います / あります

Meaning

"There is ~ in/at ~." Use います for living things (people, animals); あります for non-living things (objects, places, events).

Formation

[place] に [thing] がいます / あります

Notes

To state WHERE something is (topic known), reverse the pattern: [thing] は [place] にあります. Never use あります for people/animals.

Examples

机（つくえ）の上（うえ）に本（ほん）があります。

There is a book on the desk.

公園（こうえん）に犬（いぬ）がいます。

There is a dog in the park. (living → います)
