Had better / should 〜ほうがいい

Meaning

Gives advice or a recommendation — "you'd better do ~ / you should ~". Usually attaches to the ta-form, but the dictionary form is also possible.

Notes

Negative advice uses the nai-form: 〜ないほうがいいです ("you'd better not ~"). Can sound blunt; soften with と思います (行ったほうがいいと思います).
