Polite prefix お / ご

Meaning

Honorific prefixes that make a word polite/respectful. お goes before native Japanese (和語) words and general nouns; ご before Chinese-origin (漢語) words.

Formation

お + [native noun/verb] / ご + [Chinese-origin noun]

Notes

Common fixed cases: お茶, お金, ご飯, ご家族. With verbs: お〜になります (honorific), お〜します (humble) — those are N4. Some words always carry お (お茶, お金) and sound wrong without it.
