Te-form sequence 〜て、

Meaning

Links actions in sequence — "did X, then did Y" — or as a light "and". The tense is set by the final verb.

Formation

[verb te-form] + 、 + [clause]

Notes

Order is usually chronological. The te-form can chain many actions; only the last verb conjugates. Do NOT use for non-sequential simultaneous actions (use 〜ながら for those).

Examples

朝起（あさお）きて、顔（かお）を洗（あら）います。

I wake up in the morning and wash my face. (habitual)

あさ朝 morning おきて起きて get up and かお顔 face o を (object) あらいます洗います wash

家（いえ）に帰（かえ）って、宿題（しゅくだい）をしました。

I went home and did my homework. (past)

友達（ともだち）に会（あ）って、一緒（いっしょ）に晩（ばん）ご飯（はん）を食（た）べました。

I met my friend and we had dinner together.

手（て）を洗（あら）って、ご飯（はん）を食（た）べて、寝（ね）ました。

I washed my hands, ate, and went to bed. (3-action chain)

駅（えき）まで歩（ある）いて、電車（でんしゃ）に乗（の）りました。

I walked to the station and got on the train.
