Volitional form 意向形

Meaning

The volitional form — expresses "let's ~" or intention ("I intend to ~"). Polite form is 〜ましょう (already covered in N5); the plain form 〜よう/〜う is N4.

Formation

Notes

Plain volitional 〜よう is used in: 〜ようと思う ("I'm thinking of ~"), 〜ようとする ("try to ~"), 〜ようにする ("make an effort to ~"). For suggestions to others, use 〜ましょう (polite) or 〜よう (casual).
