Someone else wants 〜たがる

Meaning

Reports that a THIRD PERSON wants to do something — "he wants to ~", "she is eager to ~".

Formation

[verb ます-stem] + たがる · 行きます → 行きたがる

Notes

Japanese does not let you state another person's feelings as fact, so 〜たい is for yourself and 〜たがる for others: ×彼は行きたいです → 彼は行きたがっています. The ている form is the normal one for a current wish. The object particle is を, not が: 水を飲みたがる.

Examples

弟（おとうと）は新（あたら）しい自転車（じてんしゃ）を買（か）いたがっています。

My little brother wants to buy a new bicycle.
