Meaning
An attempt or an intention — "try to ~", "be about to ~".
Formation
[verb volitional] + とする · 行こうとする, 食べようとする
Notes
Built on the volitional, so it means making the effort, not succeeding — 開けようとしたが開かなかった. In the past it also means "was on the point of": 出かけようとした時に電話が鳴った. Distinct from 〜てみる, which is trying something out to see how it goes.
Examples
ドアを開（あ）けようとしましたが、開（ひら）きませんでした。
I tried to open the door, but it would not open.
