Formation

[plain form] + ということだ（〜とのことだ in formal messages）

Notes

Two jobs share the form. As hearsay it reports a source neutrally, much like 〜そうだ; as a conclusion it means "in other words". A source phrase such as 〜によると points to the hearsay reading.
